This…is the mystery of baptism: God desired to save us by going to the bottom of this abyss himself so that every person, even those who have fallen so low that they can no longer perceive heaven, may find God’s hand to cling to and rise from the darkness to see once again the light for which he or she was made.
—Pope Benedict XVI
I noticed particularly here the reference to the ability to perceive heaven. I sometimes wonder which is worse, not to perceive it at all, or to be able to perceive it while believing that it is unattainable. I sometimes find myself close to the latter position. But even when it’s difficult for me to say honestly that I truly believe, I never stop hoping.
(Quotation from this month’s Magnificat.)
