Although I live in town, there is a good bit of swampy woodland, which I hope will be forever undevelopable, around my house. Walking at night on our street, which is bordered on the other side by woods and a little creek, I’m sometimes startled by a sort of bark-scream from the dark woods. And once or twice I’ve caught a glimpse of something running across the road which has a big bushy tail and is not a dog or a cat and doesn’t really look like a raccoon, bounding rather than scurrying. I thought it might be a fox, and it finally occurred to me recently to put the sound and the glimpse together. Sure enough, this is exactly what I hear:
You can imagine that it’s startling to hear this suddenly from nearby in the darkness. When I play this video the dogs go nuts.
