The nice thing is that unless everybody you’re fb friends with also moves to Google+, there’s no point, and they probably won’t, so why bother?

That’s exactly it. Assembling even a group of the people you really want to be friends with on Google seems such an effort.
But then, what if the people you really want to be friends with (my children in particular) all start using Google and not Facebook? 😉

Well, then you migrate, and things will be ok, after some transitional pains–as long as everyone goes. The big problem will be if many leave and many stay.
