A Mid-Week Musical Treat

I found this the other day when I was looking for "Migration." It's a very young and very impressive Innocence Mission, or at least Karen–you can hardly see Don, and according to the comments on this video the other guys are the house band for the TV show (the name of which we are not supposed to mention, so that the copyright cops won't notice it). The sound is very different from their work of the past ten-plus years.

This is from their first album, of which I have a vinyl copy that I don't think I've ever listened to. Must remedy that. You could say it's derivative (U2, Cocteau Twins) but it's got some pretty original musical twists.

  1. So, is she pregnant, do you think?
You posted another video a while back in which she sang like that. The difference is startling. It’s not just the difference in voice, but in her whole demeanor.

  2. Did I? I don’t remember it. Yes, it is startling. Part of it is age, obviously, but she also seems much sadder later on. I have seen references to them having difficulty conceiving children. In fact I think I saw a statement that “Migration” had something to do with a miscarriage. I’m a little doubtful that she was pregnant there but I don’t know.

  3. I think it may have been me who posted a link to another older song. I had found a video for “Wonder of Birds” which I’d never seen before, and I’m pretty sure I put it on one of these threads.

  4. That was probably it. I know I said something about it then.

This one’s always been one of my favorite songs of theirs — definitely my fave from the first record.

  6. Also found this…opening track on the 2nd album. Looks like it was filmed off the TV, but the sound is good:

  7. That’s beautiful. Thanks. I really must get out my LP. I replaced my old ailing turntable some months ago but for lack of free time have hardly used it.
That’s one of my favorites from the 2nd album, too, which I have only on a rather worn cassette. I should upgrade it.

  8. Grumpy back home in the USA

It is beautiful, Rob. I have a copy of Umbrella that a colleague at Aberdeen made for me. I don’t listen to it enough because the box isn’t attractive

  9. I hate to admit how big an influence cover art has on me, especially back in the LP days. It can be positive and negative–it can make me want to like something more than it deserves, or less. A very recent example: the Rob G-recommended album by Beach House, Bloom. I like the music, but I’m having to fight to keep the lifeless cover art, which is the visual in this clip, from making me see the music that way. And I have the album on mp3, so there’s nothing even forcing me to see the art.
