Patriotism, Fox News Style

Item on their web site today: American Flag Bikinis for the 4th!

No, I'm not linking to it. Go find it yourself if you must.

In a way, though, I have to admit it's the absolutely perfect symbol for one aspect of what's happened to this country.

And, to answer the obvious question: yes, I do go to their site, among others, for news. This is in large part because I make a conscious effort to avoid CNN, having had my fill of their Christianity-debunking "news" stories a while back. There really isn't any news site that doesn't annoy or offend in some way.

I just realised my main sources of news these days are the Zero Hedge, the BBC, and the russian sites (like Pravda, which is still going) which my boss looks up stuff on and then talks to me about. And while the BBC has a lot of interesting articles, their filters and biases can make for frustration or amusement when noticed – there’s times I read BBC coverage purely out of curiosity for what they think it’s permissible for the great british public to know.
Fox is, I believe, a Rupert Murdoch enterprise. In the UK his most notable achievement has been pioneering the “page 3 girl”, some young lady (typically on page 3 of some tabloid) baring her breasts to the world, often accompanied by some faux-empowered rhetoric along the lines of “I am not ashamed of my breasts because I’m a woman and I have breasts and my breasts are beautiful etc.” Sounds like his modus operandi does not significantly vary in other countries.
Anyway, happy 4th of July… I’m travelling to Levoča with an American friend and we usually insult each other’s countries as a sort of ritual, but I’ll keep my anti-american grumblings to a minimum today. (I’m even wearing a small “USA” badge as a gesture of goodwill…)

  2. We appreciate your restraint and support. 🙂 I don’t think either of our countries is in a very encouraging condition these days.
Your approach to the BBC is pretty much like mine to most of the big American media. I will give Fox credit for at least presenting an alternative to those guys, even though it’s not such a great alternative. Yes, it is a Murdoch thing, and the “page 3 girl” is known even on these shores. That “faux empowered” thing you’re talking about is one of the more annoying pop culture phenomena.
Btw the flag bikini story had disappeared the next time I looked at Fox, later in the day. I hope it was because people complained.
