  1. aww…I’m Your Man is my favorite Leonard Cohen song. You have to be female to get how seductive it is, or maybe just to tolerate him at all.

  2. I never thought of it as seductive, although that certainly makes sense. But you definitely don’t have to be female to tolerate him, or think he’s the most likely of our singer-songwriters to be listened to a hundred years from now–as I was arguing on Facebook a week or so ago.

  3. I’d like to see that argument, since I agree. This Lounge Lizard thing is such a send-up of “I’m Your Man.” And he does sort of sound like the Crash Test Dummies now.

  4. Well, one guy agreed with me, and another was pretty skeptical, but I got the impression that he didn’t really know LC’s stuff–seemed to be judging by “Suzanne” and other earlier stuff. We all thought Dylan was another possible candidate, and maybe Paul Simon. Guy 1 agreed with me that as much as we like Dylan his stuff is so ragged and uneven that it might not hold up that well. Guy 2 nominated Jerry Garcia + Robert Hunter, but I’m doubtful.
What’s that last “If you…” bit in the Lounge Lizard’s song? I think it’s “If you lack something basic…but I can’t get the rest.
I had to go listen to “I’m Your Man” again, not having heard it for some time. It is good but far from my favorite.

  5. If Leonard Cohen isn’t listened to 100 years from now, so much the worse for our posterity.

  6. All I really know about Leonard Cohen is that the abbot of St Paul’s Without the Walls is a fan.

  7. An abbot of discernment.
