Well, it looks like TypePad's crisis may really be over this time. Let's hope so. This was reportedly an extortion attempt: pay us and we'll leave you alone, but there's no word on who or where it came from. Pretty despicable. Makes me think of stocks and flogging.

Frustratingly, and amusingly, it was taken down again at almost exactly the same moment I posted the above. Ain’t over yet, I guess.

Not going to declare crisis over until at least 48 hours have passed without problems.

what’s happening?

There’s a thing called a “denial of service attack” in which nasty people flood a site with network data requests generated at computer rather than human speed, overwhelming the site’s ability to respond. The effect is to more or less lock out normal usage of the site. And apparently there is some group–nobody has said who or where or why–that is engaged in extortion by this means. They start an attack and then demand money in exchange for calling it off. TypePad apparently has been standing up to them, refusing the demand, but suffering five days of serious disruption. Stocks and flogging, I say.

Someone commenting on a news story about the TypePad attack suggested a cruise missile.
