Back in August I had a post about the often-funny result of someone hearing a common phrase without having seen it in print or learned its actual meaning, then setting down in print what he thought he heard, which is sometimes oddly plausible. "Tow the line" as a misconstrual of "toe the line" was one example.
A couple of days ago I saw a new one which I think deserves the grand prize in this exhibition:
"It's a doggy-dog world."
Ha! My ex-wife used to say that! It actually came up just the other day at work when one of the girls said that her friend always says “quote on quote” instead of “quote-unquote.”
Ha. Never heard that one but I guess It might not have registered if I had. “Doggy-dog” just floored me. Took me a moment just to figure it out.
Knowledge is Power.
France is Bacon.
Ask any professor, they will agree.
But will they mean it?
But surely France is cheese?
