All over the world, women are saying "For instance, my husband" when they see this headline.

In that case I would have to wonder what they are saying about themselves.

  2. I’m sure they would say they didn’t realize he was a Neanderthal, but then your observation still applies, as they shouldn’t have missed the signs:

That looks like a guy that could sling a mean pizza.

Such women would be mere shrews, although… I did laugh!

  5. I know the battle-of-the-sexes stuff can be harmful if it’s done very seriously, but I think there’s a lot of room for good sport about it.
I had an exchange on another blog some time ago about men and women and humor. I think each has a tendency to think the other is humor-impaired, and I think that’s often the result of neither much liking to be made fun of.
A joke I remember from the early ’70s: Esquire (U.S. men’s magazine, not porno but sorta racy) had a cover story about feminism called “Ten Women Who Are Cute When They Get Mad.”

You know the title of this thread can be read several ways.
Imperative: All over the world, women!! (For when we take over.)
Resigned or disgusted: All over the world, women. (Can’t get away from them.)
Ecstatic: All over the world! Women!
But, darn it, every time I see the sidebar it makes me think: People all over the world, join hands, start a love train, love train.

Oh, I agree with that. There’s a lot of humor that comes from our complete inability to understand each other, and that’s fun. As long as it doesn’t get spiteful or really become a war it’s great. I think about Perelandra where each of the three races thinks the other two are amusing, but there’s no rancor.

And that’s the point, Janet, that there was no rancour. We cannot say the same thing of our fallen world. But I can more readily share this kind of joke here or with other Christians, b/c I know that there is firstly a deep committment to marriage and family and secondly a real affection for the opposite sex. In such an environment, there is no spite and it’s all just good-natured raillery. Unfortunately, many of the women in the world who would say such a thing seem to have little if any solidarity with men. And that cuts both ways.

  9. “…a real affection for the opposite sex…” Yes, you can tell by the general tone and spirit of gender humor whether the one delivering it possesses that or not. To me, that’s a great determiner of whether it’s actually funny or not.

  10. By the way, I meant to say how funny Janet’s various takes on the subject line of this post were.
