The ArchRooster

To those caviling small-minded persons who would ask "Why should a Catholic radio station be in possession of a giant rooster?" I answer: why not?

ArchRooster
I mean, angels are popularly pictured with wings, and roosters have wings, so…. You'll note that he is tethered, so as not to menace the populace.

  1. I keep trying to think of something to say about this, but it’s beyond me.

  2. One could say it speaks for itself, but that doesn’t explain what it’s saying.

  3. Both may have wings, but the cruciak difference is that angels can fly, and roosters can’t.

  4. I can see why Peter might be touchy about a crowing cock, but I like Paul’s hymn.

  5. Is there some medieval tradition associating the Incarnation or maybe some specific event like the Nativity with the crowing of a cock? I have a vague idea there might be but I could just be imagining it.

Few things appeal to my sense of humour more than giant animal replicas on buildings. I hope there will be plenty of them in heaven, alongside the angels.

Yes, and this one seems to be very well executed. I wonder where it came from.
I seem to remember from my art class that in the catacombs, Peter is usually depicted with a rooster.
I found on a website somewhere-or-other that there is a Spanish/Latin American tradition that the only time a rooster crowed at midnight was at the Nativity. It used to seem to me like my rooster crowed 24 hours a day, but he’s been dead for several years, so maybe I’ve making that up.

  8. I agree, Francesca.

  9. Of course it really needs to be a duck to reach the pure heights of silliness.
Yeah, Janet, I think that may be what I was vaguely remembering (about the cock crowing at midnight).
Where I work is in the middle of a medium-sized city, but there is a rooster somewhere in the vicinity which I occasionally hear–in the middle of the day, or the afternoon.

  10. The only problem now is I can’t say Tuesday Lauds without thinking of the giant rooster.

  11. I’m sorry but I’m also amused. So I guess I must not be that sorry…

  12. I’ve grown quite fond of the rooster.

I agree a duck would be good, but so would a skunk, for instance, or a mouse.

  14. Or a moose.

Funny little forest creatures might be best, eg an anteater

  16. Well, no, a duck is always best. I saw four ducks this morning–they were lined up in a neat row, head to tail, all with their bills rooting around in the sand. I laughed. I was sorry I didn’t have my camera.

  17. Not that funny little forest creatures wouldn’t be excellent as well. 🙂
