Chuck Berry: You Never Can Tell

Weekend Music

One of the master’s less well-known but most engaging songs. I don’t know whether he invented the word “coolerator” or not, but it’s a great word.

I find myself hoping that Pierre and the mademoiselle are still alive and still married somewhere in east Louisiana, and that they still get up and dance to a Chuck Berry song every now and then.

  1. I’ve been singing that song all week, but hearing Emmylou’s version.

  2. Funny, I started to mention Emmylou’s version in the post. She always has picked good songs to cover.

  3. Always think of this song when I hear the Beatles’ “Ob la di, ob la da.”

  4. Yeah, never thought about it but there’s definitely a connection.

  5. I can’t find it online, but there’s a really touching item in today’s paper about a couple who got married in the mid-1940s when she was 16 and he was 28. They had to elope, and her family was furious, and everybody said it wouldn’t work. They’ve been married almost 70 years now. He’s 98 and declining fast, and she’s doing everything she can to make things good for him while she can. It goes to show you never can tell.

  6. Well-known though for Tarantino fans…
