I went looking for this Elmore James classic on YouTube a few days ago, and to my surprise found it performed very creditably by a young Finnish woman. Truly, American music has conquered the world.
I have to admit, though, that I prefer the original. It just has a flavor that's a product of a time and a place and a culture and a technology that can't be duplicated.

I love it that she says, “go wrong wit’ you, even though she cleans up the pronunciation in other places. Somehow when you said it was Finnish, I didn’t expect that earthy voice.

I noticed that, too, and chuckled, because it had to be so deliberate. I was surprised by the voice, too. When I first saw the video in the list of results for the song title, I thought it must be a different song. The first few seconds were almost disorienting–it was like seeing some guy in a black t-shirt, with spiky hair and a lot of piercings and tattoos, open his mouth and have a Schubert song come out.
Or perhaps, like many non-native speakers of English, she has trouble with “th” anyway.
Hadn’t thought of that–could be. I wonder if it’s more typical to come up with an “s” or “z” kind of sound, rather than “t”, as in the stereotypical German or French accent. Finnish is a totally different linguistic world, though, so that wouldn’t mean much.
But she doesn’t have any trouble with that “th” sound in other words, like “things” and “other.”

Oh yeah, so she does, right there in the same sentence: “when THings go wrong, so wrong wi-choo.” I notice Elmore’s varies–“wit-yoo” to “wi-choo” or “wit-choo”.
