15 Minutes of Exercise Every Day Reduces Risk of Death. I was about to say WebMD needs a better headline writer, but that's what the first sentence says, too: "A study published by The Lancet shows that if inactive people increased their physical activity by just 15 minutes per day, they could reduce their risk of death by 14% and increase their life expectancy by three years. "  So, exercise for 15 minutes a day and your chance of dying drops from 100% to 86%.  Very useful information. Surprised it isn't getting more publicity, though I did see it on Google News.

  1. I heard something similar on NPR the other day. No wonder we are having a population crisis with so many more people living forever.
    Once I heard that for every hour you exercised, you could add an hour to your life. Well, you can see the problem with this. You end up with exactly the same number of non-exercising hours as you would have had if you hadn’t exercised, so it wasn’t a great incentive.

    Hmmm… so if you work out for 7×15 minutes a day, do you reduce your chance of dying by 7×14 percent?
    Extrapolation, my favorite exercise. 😉

  4. I started to say you could try it and let us know, but the rest of us will probably be long dead before the results are clear.
    If a small amount of vitamin D (or whatever) makes you feel a little better, will 1000x that amount make you ecstatic?

  5. these things are always a law of dimishing returns I think. I always noticed that I fel much better if I did one hour a week (in a block or divided up) of exercise. My fitness would be obviously improved after just a few weeks of sustained effort, but it wouldn’t increase much with extra exercise. It’s that one hour that makes a difference so I have no problem believing that 15 mins a day would be a health benefit. The real question is, what are we going to do with the extra days/months/years we live? If we spend it all on idle crap, we might as well have died younger.
