Much excellent coverage of the Diamond Jubilee from the BBC. I would like to have been there. If I can be excused for using the crude Americanism, she's a class act.

That site tells us to expect lots of church bells during the Thames flotilla. That’s a festive feature you don’t often hear in the US, especially in big cities. I do remember all the churches in Montreal ringing their bells for five solid minutes during the opening ceremonies of the 1976 Olympics.

I don’t know when I’ve heard real live church bells. A number of churches in this area, including the Cathedral and an enormous Baptist church near where I work, have those automated things that play hymns and stuff. I don’t know whether they’re recorded or produced electronically or are physical bells played by a machine, but it’s not the same.

I just realized what it is about Dave Rawlings guitar picking. Some of his riffs are like change ringing.

For six months I lived next door to a church that rang the bells, every day, for 9 a.m. mass and for the noon and six p.m. Angelus (Angeluses? Angeli?). Heavenly!

That sounds great, although for me if it had been much earlier than 9 it might have been a problem on weekends.
