The strange thing about the mid-'60s English sound of The Clientele is that you think they sound a lot like somebody but you can't figure out exactly who. At least that's the way they affect me.
I've written about them before, in 2007 and 2008. About this album, in fact. Although I have a couple of others, I haven't gotten to know them as well.

yeah, they got it down precisely. The actual hippies were too stoned to sound like actual hippies – they are slightly off 🙂

Mac, you might like a band called Chamber Strings, which has a similar breezy 60s sound. I have their CD “A Month of Sundays,” which is pretty good. Still, my favorite “retro” band of this sort is Camera Obscura — I know I’ve mentioned them here before.

Funny you should mention Camera Obscura. I finally heard a bit of them a few days ago, and just an hour or two ago I was watching a live performance. I really like them. And I really like their performance style: I get really sick of the exaggerated and very contrived-looking gyrations of rock musicians. And don’t even get me started on the “divas.” But the front woman of this band just stands there and sings, wearing a very ordinary dress. Refreshing.
