From Small Planes, an album that was, I read somewhere, a collection of songs that for one reason or other didn't make it onto other albums. Lyrics here (scroll down for this song).

That’s a great song. For a long time I had the the last two lines as the “signature” on my emails.
Nice.
An odd thing: the All Music Guide listing for this song credits it to Jimmy Buffett?!?! and Karen Peris. Surely that’s not correct?
no, that’s gotta be a mistake. Maybe he wrote a song with the same title?
What’s interesting is that song contains the lyric about “birds of my neighborhood,” but it doesn’t appear on the album of that name (which is a great one, by the way).
Also on ‘Small Planes’ I love the song “Too Early to Say,” or whatever. I don’t remember the exact title, but that’s a really nice uptempo tune.
That doesn’t surprise me about the lyrics being in a song that isn’t on the album by that title. So many of their songs have phrases from other songs.

This is one thing I love about IM, by the way. There songs present an integrated picture of an integrated life.
I like this one, too. I’ve not heard it before

I like “Too Early to Say,” too. In fact that whole album has grown on me. I have been again playing a cd full of mp3s that I haven’t listened to much or for a long time–many hours of music–and that album is on it.
Buffett does apparently have a song called “Migration.” Not quite the same tune.

Trivia: Buffett is from Mobile and was once an altar boy in the chapel on the campus where I work.
Ugh. their songs.

I didn’t even notice. I’m getting to habituated to that kind of stuff.
Five blocks of sidewalk chalk; he steers us clear of
Blue ice-skaters and animals.
Really who else but Jimmy Buffet (ha!) writes these lyrics of such sparse and startlingly beautiful poetry…
Regret has gone down in my estimation now.
The old world had you smiling out,
putting your arms around.
I tell myself now
things I would have told to you,
the smallest plan, the greatest news.
The more days come, the more it’s true.
…
Look for me another day.
I feel that I could change.
There’s a sudden joy that’s like
a fish, a moving light;
I thought I saw it
rowing on the lakes of Canada.
…
Dream of trains carrying you
through the state parks with the cherry flowers.
When you wake up it will be
the beginning of the world.
…
The colors of rowboats, the greens and the blues.
Orange grove sidestreets you only see halfway.
And beaches in winter
and when kites are flown.
It’s the people in the cities you’ll never know,
it is everything you pass by,
wondering, will you ever return?
…And of course this Koan-like verse, which is vintage Jimmy Buffet.
The time of mistakes:
Will it ever change to another time,
like a season when the snow
will slide off the house
and leave the house clean?
Yes, almost as good as
Some people claim
there’s a woman to blame…
🙂
She is great. I get sort of misty-eyed just reading a couple of those.
Zealous Buffett fans are Parrotheads. What should zealous IM fans be? Missionheads, maybe?
Peris-heads?
Missionhearts? Girly, probably, but I don’t think her lyrics have a lot to do with the head.
AMDG
I’m sorry, it has to be “heads.” There’s a tradition to be considered. 🙂 But it doesn’t have anything to do with thinking, anyway, so don’t let that bother you.
Peris-heads sounds kinda weird. Or is it that it just looks kinda weird?
I’m a nonconformist.
