This is actually pretty cool

That was the comment my wife included when she sent me this link. And it is. It's an animated map of the current winds in the continental U.S.

That is cool. A lovelier version of what I see every night on the news here in New Zealand.
I live smack-dab in the middle of what’s called the Roaring Forties. Here’s Wikipedia’s explanation:
The Roaring Forties is the name given to strong westerly winds found in the Southern Hemisphere, generally between the latitudes of 40 and 50 degrees. The strong west-to-east air currents are caused by the combination of air being displaced from the Equator towards the South Pole and the Earth’s rotation, and there are few landmasses to serve as windbreaks.
These winds then bang into the easterly and northerly winds and make for lots of swirling, strong wind and, along with rain and cold, miserable weather much of the time.

  2. Sounds lovely, Marianne.
We are somewhere in the middle of the confluence between the system coming down from Chicago and the one moving up from Dallas. Looking out the window, it’s very still here.

Janet, as it so happens, it is still here right now as well! But a strong southwesterly is promised for later in the day. 🙂

  4. Hmm, I never thought of NZ as having a preponderance of miserable weather. I will have to readjust my image slightly.

  5. Tasmania is smack in the middle of the roaring forties too, but the worst of it is dumped on the West Coast, so here in Hobart it’s delightul!

  6. So, a bit of a hurricane-y type thing up there in the NE…
    It is a cool map.
