The March of Time

I just did it again: referred to my iPod as a Walkman. And I was already over 30 when the Walkman appeared, or at least when I first heard about it.

I remember a co-worker, some thirty years ago, painting an amusing picture of the nursing home of the future, full of decrepit hippies demanding Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin on the Muzak. The delivery system may be iPods and iPhones and such instead of Muzak, but I think the time is almost upon us.

  1. heeheehee 🙂

  2. Amusing sidelight to the history of the Walkman: “[Sony co-chairman Akio] Morita hated the name ‘Walkman’ and asked that it be changed, but relented after being told by junior executives that a promotion campaign had already begun using the brand name and that it would be too expensive to change.” (Wikipedia)

  3. Also, it still exists, as an mp3 player. In my mind it will always be a cassette player, though.

  4. I’ve never had either one, although I do lust after an iPod. I sometimes walk around with a CD player in my pocket, but it’s not doing my pocket any good and it’s really hard to get it in and out.

  5. I would never have bought an iPod, but Certain People conspired to get me one not too long after they came on the market. It’s actually a bit of an antique now–only 20 gigabytes(!). That adds up to well over 1 full week of music. Its battery is getting noticeably weaker so its days are numbered. You know there are lots of mp3 players way cheaper than the iPod, right? e.g. the Walkman.
