In honor of the election of Pope Francis, and suggested by Sally Thomas’s comment on this post of Janet’s, I will take a break from my Lenten musical fast, and offer you this, from that great penitent Franz Liszt.
Has anyone heard definitive word on which Francis(es) Pope Francis has in mind?

They’re saying it’s St. Francis of Assisi, or, as my son calls him, Francis Bernardone.
Glad you enjoyed it. I don’t know much Messiaen, but Craig (All Manner of Thing) did some really substantial posts on him some time ago that I’ve wanted to go back to, in order to advance my Messiaen-knowledge beyond Quartet for the End of Time, which I really like.
Nothing against Francis Xavier, but I’m glad it’s Bernardone.

It says on YouTube that the pianist, Wilhelm Kempff, made this recording when he was 80. Wow.
Yes, I find that inspiring and encouraging. The piece sounds even better at full volume on a good sound system.
But no doubt my comment will be caught in the spam filter …
well at least I was led by Paul to this, which I missed during Lent. it is indeed like Messiaen. I love M’s ‘simpler’ pieces like the Quartwet for the End of Time, but some of his work is out of my musical depth. Messiaen wrote an opera about St. Francis which is too sophisticated for me.
That’s true for me, too, to the extent that I’ve even heard others.
