52 Authors: A Nudge

I'd like to draw your attention to the schedule, which is in its entirety:

  • January 5: D'Anna – Percy O'Connor
  • January 12: Janet – Howard
  • January 19: El Gaucho – Rushdie
  • January 26: Rob G – Helprin
  • February 2: Robert Gotcher – de Lubac

You'll observe immediately that only one of those dates is in the future. I have one other contribution which I actually received in mid-December, to be posted when needed.  That can be the February 9 one. So we have two weeks before someone else has to come up with a contribution, or I have to write one myself, which I hadn't planned to do quite yet.

So if you want to claim a spot on the schedule–a spot in February or March, preferably–please let me know. I encourage you to do that, actually, as deadlines are usually good motivators. Or if you want to do like the first contributor and just send something to be posted any time, that's fine, too. (If you've forgotten who or what you volunteered for, see this.)

I think this is going wonderfully and hope it won't falter.

  1. I will do von balthasar for feb 22

  2. I’ll send the Sheckley piece again over the weekend, if that’s ok – I noticed an error or two that need correcting.
Provisionally I think I can get Imre Madach written up by sometime in March, let’s say 8th or 15th. (I’m getting sidetracked by the fact I need to read Paradise Lost for comparison purposes, which is not a small endeavour.)

  3. I’m very much looking forward to that, Grumpy.
That’s fine, godescalc. If you actually read PL all the way through, you’ll probably be one of the few here who has.

  4. El Gaucho

You can put me down for McMurtry some time in March, Mac.

  5. Mac, I’ll take the last one in February for Blythe.

  6. Sally Thomas

I’ll send my Gillian Allnutt piece as soon as I finish it, which will be soon. You can put it in wherever you need a week taken up.

  7. I’d love to do Tolkien March 22.

  8. Merton Dec. 6.
    Potok, Sept. 20

  9. Oh, and I hope to finish de Lubac tonight.

  10. Thanks to you all. I’ll update the schedule tomorrow (Saturday). Fixing to watch a Mardi Gras parade now.

  11. Robert Gotcher

I signed up for Newman? Why in the world did I do that?

  12. Robert Gotcher

    Alfred E. Right?

  13. El Gaucho

I’m fine for April instead if that works … lot of people making dates here.

  14. That’s a rather early Mardi Gras parade!

  15. Carnival is from the end of the Christmas season until Ash Wednesday.

  16. Mardi Gras semi-officially starts a couple of weekends before Ash Wednesday here. I think the one last night was the first. In recent years, for tourist-attracting reasons, some towns have taken to having so-called Mardi Gras parades whenever they feel like it.

  17. You might consider doing both Newmans, Robert. Maybe start with John and work up to Alfred. It would be a good excuse to read a bunch of old issues of Mad.

  18. Ok, I think I have the schedule updated correctly. Rob, the last Feb slot is the 22nd, and Grumpy had already spoken for it, so I gave you March 1. El Gaucho, I put you at March 8, but if that’s too early you can have March 29. godescalc, I’ve put the Sheckley piece in at Feb 8.
That covers us through March 22, except for Feb 15. Sally, if you get yours done in time, I’ll put it there, otherwise I’ll take it.

  19. I’ll take March 22. Not sure who yet. I think I know but we’ll see how the next couple of weeks go.
    AMDG

  20. I guess that will be March 29.
    AMDG

  21. Ok. Yes, Grumpy had claimed the 22nd.

  22. No, that’s the 22nd of Feb., R. Gotcher has the 22nd of March.
    AMDG

  23. Oh yeah, got my 22nds mixed up.

  24. El Gaucho

I’ll write it up and get it to you before March 8 and you can post whenever you want. All these dates are confusing me.

  25. I just didn’t want you to give me the 29th of February because that wouldn’t be until next year and the 52 authors would be over. 😉
    AMDG

  26. Don’t worry, I was looking at a calendar, and since there is no 29th of February on it I wouldn’t have assigned that to you.
    Ok, EG.

  27. Anne-Marie

I’ll do Rosemary Sutcliff on the first April date.
And in the Rheinland, Carnival officially begins on November 11 at 11:11 a.m.

  28. Very good. The first Sunday in April is the 5th.
    November?

  29. Anne-Marie

Yup, November. In Cologne, the official opening ceremony is part of a day-long outdoor concert attended by thousands of people. There’s a pause for Christmas, then the year’s parade leaders are announced in early January, and there’s a special Mass in the cathedral.

  30. How did that come about? Did they just keep moving it back a little at a time? Surely they have some liturgical rationale for it.
