Folks is not yo' enemy. The devil is yo' enemy.

–A preacher I heard on the radio once

  1. Amen! Preach it, brother!
You know, I’ve heard this said more elegantly, but this just says it.

  2. As delivered, it was just perfect, absolutely memorable. It wouldn’t be the same with, for instance, “your” instead of “yo”. I have heard some staggeringly good sermons or bits of sermons from black preachers on the radio.

  3. I think when you grow up in the South, that black preaching voice is part of the music of your life. At least it’s that way for me. It can be mis-used, but when it’s done right, it’s great–very down-to-earth, and truth straight up.

  4. Yep. And it’s not just preachers, it’s lots of people.
